Spotlight on Billing – ‘Getting the Best Deal’

From 1 January to 31 March 2025, the new Ofgem price cap means a household with typical energy use on a variable dual gas and electricity tariff will pay approximately:

  • £1,758 a year if paying by direct debit
  • £1,894 a year if paying by standard credit (on receipt of bill)
  • £1,711 a year if using a prepayment meter

Prices are worked out per unit of energy used. If you use more energy than the typical amount, you’ll pay more. The exact unit rate and standing charge will also vary depending on where you live. This change to the price cap represents an increase of around £20 per year across all payment methods compared to the previous period.

If you’re trying to save money on your gas or electricity, you might consider:

  • switching suppliers
  • switching to a different tariff with your current supplier

However, understanding whether you can switch and what your options are can sometimes be confusing.

Help is at hand. You can contact one of our dedicated energy advisers, who can help assess your situation and advise you on your next steps. We’re impartial, so we can’t recommend specific suppliers, but we can empower you to make informed decisions and take control of your energy costs.
